Swiss. Is it to greens fault that Rooney, Gerrard, lanyard etc were dogshit?
He also made some good saves v yanks
He didn't even play against Algeria.
1 fuck up didn't cost us. (Though it wasn't helpful)

Didn't we struggle with Algeria in the 2nd game in 2010 and drew 0-0? That's what cost us top place in the group.

On The ball
What I couldn't understand is that we looked pretty goods in the qualifications.
How the fuck USA topped the group. We would have got Ghana and then Uruguay. A pretty easy trip to the semi's.
Thank you Rob Green.

I have vague memories of 78 but my first world Cup proper was 82. Bryan Robson's double v France, Schumacher's assault on Battiston and Rossi's hatrick. England going out with a whimper, something I'd learn to get used to over the coming decades.

Swiss - sadly, I was at all of the games - we were fucking painful to watch apart from the first four minutes against the USA and the minutes between Upson's header and the linescunt cheating.
I genuinely think that with our tails up and them rattled, it would at least have been a very different game.

Still remember filling in The Sun's 1986 World Cup wall chart in my bedroom. Was too young to watch the games though so 1990 was the first World Cup I watched fully.
Probably wasn't the best of tournaments from a footballing perspective, but England were so close, I couldn't watch the penalties in the semi.

Had a trial for Notts County after that but ended up playing for Vancouver for most of his career.

Just barely...
86 - My hero at the time, a 20 year old keeper who played locally, kept France scoreless until the 79th minute of a match.
But what I really remember was him getting a very placid rooster thrown at him in the Camp Nou.

1970 Mexico - Only 10 but really enjoyed it until Gerd Muller (what a player) put the third in, we were cruising at 2 nil, even with Bonetti in goal, Sir Alf took off Bobby Charlton to save for next round and we fucked it up.

You might be right but Jesus did you watch us in the group games. Fucking aweful. And our defence was getting spilt apart.

Isnt the 1966 one really ARTY with lots of extreme closeups so that you can’t actually see any football? Brian Glanville doing a poncy voice over in a particularly pseudo intellectual style I recall

I still have a fondness for the 90's World Cups before it went much more commercial than it is now.
86 - I don't remember watching too many games as most of them were fairly late kick offs? I did fill up the Panini album, although I have no idea what happened to it!
90 - I was 12, still my favourite tournament and you do wonder if/when England will get that close again? Gazza, Pavarotti, Schillachi, Rijkaard spitting on Voller, Dodgy keeping from Higuita, Scotland getting beat by Costa Rica, Roger Milla at the corner flag...
94 - Gets a lot of bad press because England didn't qualify & the dire final. Wasn't a bad tournament at all, plenty of goals and more attacking games compared to 90, lots of good kits, virtually all the games were played in the sunshine and some decent talent on show - Romario, Bebeto, Baggio, Hagi, Stoichkov, Raducioiu (!)... and John Aldridge arguing with the 4th official! - I still think it was a better tournament than 2010 & 2002.

You have to wonder what THAT Brazil team would have done with a decent striker rather than Serginho (who could barely trap the ball).

1970. Pele dummying the keeper. Banks's save from Pele's header.
1974. Zaire kicking everyting that moved. Except the ball.
1978. Ticker tape and long haired Argentinian players.
1982. Rossi's hat trick for Italy against Brazil. THAT Brazil team.
1986. Linakers hat trick. Hand of god.
1990. Penalty based misery.
1994. Baggio missing a pen in the final.
1998. Utter despair,i really thought it was our year. Trying to explain to my (then 10 year old son) why losing a game of football much.
2002.Getting to work after getting knocked out by Brazil and finding the place like a morgue.
2006. Realising our 'golden generation' were missing something vital. Players of that calibre should have come very close to winning something.
2010. Watching our exit on Brighton beach.
2014. Suarez version of the Hunger games.
